Harry Potter Room Decor Ideas: A Magical Guest Bedroom Makeover

Recently, I've been playing the new Wizarding World game, and it sparked an idea. What if I turned my guest bedroom/office into a Harry-Potter-themed room?

Now, I want to preface this by saying I did not have a large budget for this Harry Potter room decor project at all. A lot of what I used were things that I already owned, thrifted, made, or found in the clearance sections of stores. So let's jump into it.

1. Wall art

The first piece of wall art I’m showing off today is a sign with my favorite quote from the Harry Potter books. It just really speaks to me. And it hangs perfectly on the small wall right when you enter the room.

The next bit of wall art I discovered is the Yule Ball illustration, which I just think is absolutely precious, and it makes great Harry Potter bedroom decor.

2. Nightstand

I also have a nightstand that I created using some old trunks. They were a little scuffed up, so I used a bit of Rub’n’Buff on the gold hardware to brighten them up a bit.

And then I added the HP on one of them, which were two little letters I got in the clearance section at Hobby Lobby for about $0.32 apiece. I just painted those gold and added them on.

3. Lamps

Other Harry Potter decor items in my room include a lamp that I actually got at Goodwill for just a few dollars. It reminded me of a lamp in the library or common room in Harry Potter, so I knew I had to have it.

I saw my second lamp online and really thought I could make it look like a crystal ball. So I started just with the orb. I took it apart, and I started painting it kind of in swirling motions with an iridescent pearl paint. It has a beautiful shine to it, very pearly. And then I just put it on top of a candle holder to give a little bit of height.

4. DIY illustration

Moreover, I created an illustration of the burrow, which is where the Weasleys live. And this was originally a white piece of paper that I tea stained, let dry, and got this beautiful aged look. All it takes for some Harry Potter interior design inspiration is a little creative thinking.

5. Bedding

For the bedding, I chose this really pretty rusty, striped duvet. And then I chose a mustard yellow quilt, a blue pillow in the front, and a green pillow in the back. Those are all the colors of the Hogwarts houses. You've got blue, red, green, and yellow.

Then in the front, my mom gifted me this sweet little hand-stitched pillow of Harry Potter's first letter when he got into Hogwarts.

6. Desk

On the left side of the bed, I have a desk, and I really wanted it to look like a student's desk. So it's a little bit more cluttered than I would have normally decorated, but I wanted it to look pretty authentic.

7. Birdcage

Next, I thrifted a birdcage and got a little owl on Amazon. In the bottom, I cut up an extra Daily Prophet newspaper that I had and kind of scattered it around Hedwig's cage for an authentic look.

8. Window decor

For the window, I got this cling wrap from Amazon to give it kind of a Hogwarts look. It was incredibly inexpensive, very easy to use, and it also provides some privacy in the room.

9. Hagrid’s umbrella

Next is Hagrid's umbrella. Now, online, these were pretty expensive, and they also weren't flowery, whereas in the books, it's described as a flowery umbrella. So I found an umbrella at Goodwill for just a few dollars, and I painted it pink. Then, I used some paint that I already had to stamp on a flower shape and give it a little bit of dimension, and it turned out really cute.

11. Broomsticks

I also mounted some broomsticks that I handmade. They're all a little bit different since I used different kinds of sticks for each one. I got broomstick handles on Amazon, and I just painted them so they wouldn't all be too matchy-matchy.

So that is what my happy, little Harry Potter room looks like. I was on a budget while choosing all the pieces of Harry Potter decor I currently have displayed, but I used a lot of creativity and excitement to pull it all together because Harry Potter just makes me really happy.
