Buy This Not That: What You Should Buy (& Avoid) at IKEA
I love IKEA furniture, from the Scandi design (so on-trend right now) to the affordable prices, but I don't want my home to look like an IKEA showroom.
Also, with IKEA's popularity, I don't want my home to look like everyone else's either. So I was pleased to come across this video shopping guide from interior design enthusiast Kristen McGowan.
The video is actually from 2022, but the products featured are still available and the advice still rings true. I agree with her picks and what she has to say so much that I had to share this with you:
Redesign Recommends!
Table of contents
Sofas
Starting with the sofa section, Kristen breaks down the pros and cons of popular options. She advises against the Söderhamn modular sofa, citing its lack of comfort and low-profile design as drawbacks.
Instead, she recommends the Äpplaryd sofa line for its modern, yet versatile, design and comfortable cushions.
For those interested in mid-century modern style, Kristen suggests the Smedstorp sofa, which combines sleek design with comfort.
Accent Chairs
Moving on to accent chairs, Kristen highlights the iconic Poäng chair but notes that its overuse has made it a less appealing option.
For those seeking a boho aesthetic, she suggests the Buskbo round chair or the Hommerstead chair, both of which add warmth and texture to a space.
Coffee Table
In the coffee table section, Kristen advises against the popular LACK table.
Opt instead for the Lisabo series, which features a more sculptural design and better craftsmanship.
Pillow Inserts
Kristen also discusses the importance of choosing the right throw pillow inserts, recommending the Fjädrar inserts for their superior quality and support.
Rugs
When it comes to rugs, Kristen recommends steering clear of large, patterned designs that may quickly go out of style. Instead, she suggests choosing neutral, textural rugs like the Lohals jute rug, which can add warmth to any room.
Media Units
For those looking to build a custom media unit, Kristen endorses the Besta system, which allows for a high degree of customization.
Bedroom Furniture
She also recommends upgrading from the basic Malm bed and dresser to the Idanas line (below), which offers a more elevated and timeless look.
Bedding
In the bedding section, Kristen advises avoiding bold, patterned duvet covers in favor of simple, timeless options like crisp white or subtle designs. She also praises IKEA's linen duvet covers for their soft, luxurious feel.
Lighting
When it comes to lighting, Kristen warns against shiny, plastic-looking wall sconces and recommends more stylish and affordable alternatives, such as woven plug-in wall sconces.
Artwork & Plants
Kristen concludes her tour in the wall art and plant sections. She advises against purchasing generic wall art from IKEA, suggesting instead that shoppers buy frames and create or source their own artwork.
For artificial plants, Kristen recommends opting for more realistic-looking options like eucalyptus plants, which can add a natural touch to any space.
Overall, Kristen's video is packed with practical tips and thoughtful recommendations, helping us make smarter choices during our next IKEA shopping trips.
