Budget-Friendly Christmas Decor: Simple DIY Ideas for a Festive Home

Looking for some budget Christmas décor? Well, I’ve got you covered! Today, as I decorate my house, I thought I’d share a few of my designer secrets with you, so stay tuned.

Vignettes

Let’s start with this little vignette in my bedroom. I’ve already set up three little trees on a mirrored round tray. Now, here’s the coolest thing—I found this product in a Christmas store a couple of years ago, and it’s called “snow to go.” This tiny bottle makes three gallons of snow! Let me show you how it works.

First, I’m going to add about three scoops of the powder, and then you just pour in a little water.

Watch what happens! Isn’t that so cool? Let’s add a bit more water… look at that!

Oh my goodness, this would be so fun with kids or grandkids—or honestly, who needs kids? This is fun for anyone! When you touch it, it feels just like real snow.

This “snow” will last about a week, and if you’ve got it in a small vignette like this, you can always make more when it fades.

I’ve added these vintage little deer to the vignette—probably my most special Christmas décor. These belonged to my mother, who passed away two years ago.

We didn’t grow up with much money, but she always made Christmas beautiful. Instead of buying snow, she used powdered sugar, but these little deer were a staple every year. I absolutely adore them.

This vignette is a great example of budget-friendly Christmas decorating. I just used a tray to contain the snow, added some inexpensive little trees, leftover ornaments I already had, pine cones, and of course, the two little deer. And yet, it looks so elegantly beautiful to me.

Here are a few more vignette ideas:

Christmas Tree Garland

Now, I have a super cool idea for garland for your tree. I found this yarn, and it’s called Fur A Loop Chinchilla. Oh my goodness, look how beautiful it is!

I decided to use it as garland for my tree because I have a flocked tree with a bit of a woodsy look, thanks to the birch ribbon. If you’re going to do this, I highly recommend adding the yarn before you finish decorating your tree. But, I was so excited to see how it would look that I didn’t mind messing up the décor a bit. If things got knocked off, I could just fix it later.

Luckily, I didn’t knock too many things off! I got that yarn on, and I absolutely love how it turned out. It doesn’t stand out too much; it’s just another texture that adds to the tree’s look. The yarn was 11 yards long, and for my nine-foot tree, I only needed two. I’m thrilled with how it came together.

Trim Stems

Now, I’m out here on my front porch because, well, I need glitter containment! But I wanted to share another idea with you. This one’s pretty neat. Head to the stem aisle at your local craft store and look for a stem that has a bit of glitter or something you like.

I picked this one because it’s got a few different little flowers on it. What I like to do, and I do this a lot with stems, is get a big one and cut it into smaller pieces. I just trim it down a bit and voilà—I’ve got multiple bits to use!

Here’s what I do with these pieces. I take small snippets of the stem and tuck them into my garland, spacing them out every few inches. Just one large stem can cover an entire garland, making it look full and festive without breaking the bank.

You can also trim stems this way and use them in your tree:

Of course, you can also use stems to create a wintery floral arrangement:

Use a Throw or Fabric as a Tree Skirt

Here’s another budget-friendly Christmas décor tip! I’ve mentioned before that instead of a traditional tree skirt, you can use a throw blanket around the base of your tree. But if you’re looking for something a bit different, head to the fabric section at your craft store and find something unique.

I found this super-soft fabric on sale, and you only need about a yard or a yard and a half. It makes a gorgeous tree skirt that’s totally different!

Add Ornaments to Everything

And check out this wreath—it’s made entirely from Dollar Tree items! The whole thing cost me just six dollars.

You can also add cheap ornaments is other displays around your home:

Add Sprigs of Greenery

Never Underestimate the Power of a Bow

Well, I’ve got to get back to decorating! Right now, I’ve got a bit of a mess in every room, but that’s just how it goes.

The good news is, you can create beautiful Christmas décor without spending a lot of money. I hope these ideas help inspire you! Have a happy holiday!
