3 Interior Design Mistakes That Will Date Your Home Fast

Let’s talk about three common design mistakes that can make your home look dated fast.

Even though we all have different ways of expressing our personal style, there are some common design mistakes to avoid to ensure that our style is one we’ll love for a long time.

So, without further ado, let’s dive into those design mistakes and what you can do instead.

Mistake 1: Not Balancing Warm and Cool Color Tones

Mistake number one is not balancing warm and cool color tones. From the very warm Tuscan and Mediterranean crazes to the all-white and all-gray interiors of recent years, failing to balance warm and cool tones can make a space feel either suffocatingly claustrophobic or cold, bland, and maybe even a little depressing.

Look no further than nature for balance. Wood is a perfect example of cool and warm balance.

Even though it may have an overall warm or cool look, if you examine it closely, you’ll see warm and cool tones in each piece.

If you’re contemplating a synthetic or tile wood look, or a stone look for your home, select one with warm and cool tones for a more natural appearance. This way, you can use elements of each to choose your color palette for walls, cabinetry, and furnishings.

If you’ve already gone heavy in one direction or the other, you can bring some warmth to a very cool interior with woods, warm metals, and warmer-toned fabrics and furnishings.

Perhaps adding a patterned rug could tie in the existing cool tones while introducing warmer ones.

Conversely, you could introduce cooler tones to a very warm interior in a similar way. Although warmer tones are currently trending, we’re seeing a nice balance with accents of soft white, black, and hints of cool neutrals to balance the heat.

Mistake 2: Following Trends Too Closely

Mistake number two is following trends too closely. The word "trend" is really overused. Just because something is trending doesn’t mean it’ll have staying power. When something trends for a short time, it’s a fad that fades out quickly, leaving the space looking dated before you know it.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t try out new things that appeal to us. The secret to navigating these constantly changing trends is to create a timeless base of neutral colors, natural textures, and classic, including modern classic, design choices that are simple and sophisticated.

This way, evolving trends and styles can be incorporated into them.

Experimenting with new décor is fun and can breathe new life into a space, but only if it’s right for you. Your home should reflect your personal style and taste.

Incorporating elements that express your personality and interests will help create a space that feels truly authentic.

Mistake 3: Going All In on One Style

Mistake number three is going all in on one style. Decorating strictly in one style can result in a space that feels frozen in time and can make it feel theme-y and unnatural. When a space feels like too much of any one thing, it can become a little boring.

What’s exciting about developments in interior design in recent years is that styles are becoming a fusion of past classics, both traditional and modern, and more current developments like biophilic design.

We can see this in warm and natural styles like organic modern, warm minimalism, and Japandi, which take elements of established modern design styles and blend in organic elements for a fresh look.

To create a cohesive look when blending several styles, select a predominant style that will make up 60 to 70 percent of the design and accent it with 30 to 40 percent of another one or two styles. This will give you a cohesive look that’s also varied and interesting.

Ok. I didn't answer your question exactly, but use the color(s) I suggested for a rug, maybe patterned & including yellow and blue.
