How to Choose a Bar Stool: All the Measurements You Need
Hello, I'm Melissa Carl, an interior designer. Today I'll guide you through the process of determining how many bar stools you need for your kitchen island, how to choose a bar stool of the right height, and how to space them appropriately.
There are so many beautiful bar stool designs available and knowing the difference between bar stools and counter stools and how to measure them for your needs helps you make the right choice.
How to choose a bar stool
Step 1: Identify your counter height
Assess your counter height to determine whether you need bar stools or counter stools.
Bar counters are around 42 inches high.
Kitchen counters and islands are typically 36 inches high.
Take note of the seat height as well—
- Bar stools are generally 28 to 30 inches high.
- Counter stools range from 24 to 26 inches high.
To ensure comfortable legroom, leave at least 10 to 12 inches between the counter and the seat.
Step 2: Calculate space between stools
Now, let's talk about the space between your stools.
As a general rule, leave 28 inches between the centers of each stool.
This equates to about 6 inches between stools placed side by side.
If your stools are wider or swivel, consider leaving 8 to 10 inches between them.
To figure out how many stools will fit, measure the length of your counter and divide it by 28.
For example, if your island is 70 inches long, divide it by 28, and you'll find that you can fit approximately three stools.
Step 3: Leave space at the ends
Lastly, don't forget to leave 10 to 12 inches from the end of your island to the edge of your stools. This ensures a comfortable and visually appealing arrangement.
Step 4: Explore stool options and shop smart
Consider the aesthetic and functionality of your space when choosing stools. Now that you know how many you need and the spacing requirements, explore various stool designs and materials that complement your kitchen decor.
