Doorknobs, though often overlooked, play a significant role in our daily lives. They not only provide functionality by allowing us to open and close doors but also contribute to the overall aesthetics of a space.

From traditional to modern, doorknobs come in various styles and designs to suit different preferences and needs. Let's discuss these five types of doorknobs that showcase the diversity in both functionality and style.

1. Classic Round Doorknobs

Classic round doorknobs are timeless and widely used in both residential and commercial settings. They feature a simple, circular design that offers ease of use and blends seamlessly with various interior styles.

Made from materials such as brass, stainless steel, or ceramic, these doorknobs exude elegance and durability. Their understated charm makes them a popular choice for traditional homes, but they can also complement contemporary spaces with their versatility.

2. Lever Doorknobs

Lever doorknobs are designed for convenience, particularly for individuals with mobility issues or disabilities. Unlike traditional round doorknobs that require twisting, lever doorknobs can be easily pushed down to open a door, making them more accessible to everyone.

Available in a range of styles, including sleek and modern designs or ornate and traditional motifs, lever doorknobs add both functionality and aesthetic appeal to any space. Kindly consider that these can be opened by young kids or pets, so keep that in mind before choosing the best doorknobs for you.

Thumb latch doorknobs, also known as gate latches, harken back to traditional and rustic design aesthetics. Characterized by their thumb-operated latch mechanism, these doorknobs evoke a sense of reminiscent of old-world craftsmanship. Typically crafted from wrought iron, bronze, or brass, thumb latch doorknobs exude a rustic elegance that adds character to any door.

Their sturdy construction and tactile appeal make them a popular choice for entry doors, garden gates, or interior doors in farmhouse-style homes and country cottages. 5. Pocket Doorknobs

Pocket doorknobs are a specialized type of doorknob designed for pocket doors, which slide into a wall cavity rather than swinging open like traditional doors. These doorknobs are installed flush against the surface of the door, allowing them to slide smoothly into and out of the wall pocket.

Pocket doorknobs typically feature a recessed design to prevent interference with the door's movement and ensure a seamless transition between open and closed positions. Available in various materials and finishes, including sleek stainless steel, classic brass, or modern matte black, pocket doorknobs can complement a wide range of interior styles while providing discreet functionality for spaces where space-saving solutions are essential, such as small bathrooms or closets.

I had a very smart cat. He opened door knobs simply by using both paws & rotating. He also used to open our parakeets’ cage. I thought I’d stop that by clothes-pinning the door closed. No such luck. He just paw-smacked off the clothes pin & opened the door. I taught him to shake, sit, and play dead when I said , “Bang!” I sure loved Smokey!
