Transforming My Son's Room: A Beach-Themed Makeover Journey

Today, I'm sharing a total room makeover for my toughest client yet—my son. We're stepping up the game in this little guy's space.

When I asked him how he wanted his room to look, he said, "Mommy, I want to feel like I'm at the beach."

So join me as we say goodbye to Spider-Man and hello to a tranquil and serene setting—a space perfect for my little beach lover.

Bedroom before:

I'm thrilled to create a space that's peaceful and relaxing—a sanctuary for him, and something he can grow into. With kids, it can be tricky, but for the accent wall, I've teamed up with Wall Pops to create this beach theme he desires.

Wall Pops peel-and-stick wallpaper is fantastic because it's easy to apply and remove, perfect for when someone changes their mind.

I chose the Beach Wood pattern for its weathered wood look and paired it with Sherwin-Williams Passive Gray.

We love to make styling a room a family affair, so my boy helped with painting.

Once we finished, I got to work on the wallpaper. The first step is ensuring your first panel is level both vertically and horizontally. This is crucial because you'll build off that panel.

Once your paper is level, you just peel and stick. It's that simple. When doing an accent wall, start in the center to give the space a cohesive look.

As you work, use a smoothing tool to ensure the wallpaper adheres smoothly to the walls. The result was amazing—a product that goes up in minutes and comes down in seconds. I absolutely love the look.

Now, let's move on to the room tour, starting with the swing chair. My little guy doesn't like overstimulation, and this chair is perfect for a calming effect, especially after school and before bedtime. It has a pocket area for books and a cup holder for bottled water. I found the seat cushion and pillow on clearance at Target.

We filled some gorgeous glass bowls from Pottery Barn with sand from our spring break beach trip.

He outgrew his little train table, so we replaced it with a cute activity table from Pier 1. The sea green color ties in perfectly with our new palette, and the drawers pull out on both sides for easy access to toys.

For bedding, I chose grays and navy blues, mixing textures and fabrics for a warm and inviting space. The duvet with beautiful stitching is from Pottery Barn Teen, and I mixed pillows from HomeGoods and Pottery Barn. He loves the cute shark pillow I found in the children's section at HomeGoods.

On the top bunk, we have a navy blue shag pillow and great bedding from HomeGoods. The super cool paper mache shark teeth from Pottery Barn Teen add a fun touch.

The bunk bed has ample drawer space for clothes and toys.

Sometimes, the littlest details make a huge impact. I found adorable twinkle lights at Pier One—they're sand bottles that give his room a beautiful glow at night.

The blue whale art and netting at the head of the bed are from HomeGoods.

The kids have a separate play area, but I added a basket in his room for his favorite toys. The poof ottomans from Target were a cool find.

My toughest client wasted no time enjoying his new space:

I ordered wall pads from Home Depot for extra wall protection, although this chair is meant for swaying, not swinging—boys will be boys.

I hope you enjoyed this room tour and got your creative juices flowing. Let me know in the comments below what your favorite feature was in the room. As always, until next time, love and peace.
