Today, I'm decorating the entry console that sits right behind me, which is right across from the seating area.

Of course, I could show you how I layer things to create a beautiful, cohesive arrangement, but I thought I’d break things down into easy steps using five key elements.

That way, you can see the thought process that goes behind creating these beautiful styling vignettes.

Let's Play with Styling Ideas

Decorating is all about experimenting with proportion, color, and scale to see what works best. Since we all like options, today I’m going to try three different looks. Then, I’ll ask you to let me know which one is your favorite!

Pro Tip for Seasonal Styling

Before we get started, here’s a tip: When planning seasonal styling or changing your decorating arrangements, gather all your décor items and group them by color on a flat surface. This way, you can see what you have to work with, and it makes the styling experience easier.

By laying everything out like this, you can easily pick, mix, and match pieces, and experiment with complementary colors, different shapes, and heights. It’s like having your own little décor store!

Now, let’s dive into the three different looks I created using mostly items I already had, but with a few artificial stems and candles I picked up along the way.

Look 1: Simple, Minimalist Fall Vibes

The first arrangement is simple—fall-inspired without being over-styled or too theme-y.

Step 1: Use a Backdrop

For styling a console that sits against a wall, start with a backdrop like a mirror, piece of art, or wall décor. Make sure it’s proportionally shaped and sized to the console.

Ideally, the wall hanging should be about two-thirds of the length of the console.

Step 2: Add a Tall Element

Next, add a tall element to bridge the gap between the console and the backdrop. I’m using a tall textured vase for a floral arrangement. I keep things simple by using some minimal fall-inspired elements. I’ve had these artificial branches for a couple of years, but I believe Hobby Lobby still carries them.

The bare branches remind me of how wildflowers lose their leaves in autumn. I shape them to add movement and interest, bending them at different lengths to give the arrangement a natural flow.

Though I don’t usually use traditional pumpkins in my décor, I decided to repurpose a canister I received as a gift as a subtle nod to fall.

Repurposing things is one of my favorite ways to style! I also use a small jar from an old reed diffuser for long matches, adding a match strike to the bottom.

Step 3: Balance with Texture

To balance the arrangement, I place a white marble tray on the opposite side, layering in a couple of trentine coasters and candles.

By mixing textures and keeping everything within a cohesive color scheme, the look feels intentional yet effortless.

I also repurpose this little metal maple leaf that was originally on a syrup bottle, by tying it to the candle top.

Step 4: Create a Triangle Shape

Try to mimic the shape of an abstract triangle in your groupings.

This approach is pleasing to the eye because it adds dimension and interest to your arrangement.

Step 5: Ground the Bottom of the Console

On the lower shelf, I ground the space with a couple of books in complementary colors, topped with a bowl filled with seed pods.

To complete the look, I add a mango wood vase with soft, muted branches, adding a bit of softness to the bottom.

Now that you’ve seen how I created this simple, fall-inspired vignette, let’s move on to the second look!

Look 2: Warm, Organic Fall Colors

For the second look, I incorporate fall-inspired colors with a warm, cozy feel.

Step 1: Add a Lamp for Warmth

I start by placing a lamp with a light brown wood base on one side. Next to it, I place a carved wooden bowl. The warm tones reflect the earthy colors of fall leaves, adding an interesting element to the mix.

Step 2: Incorporate Amber Tones

An amber glass soy candle from one of my favorite brands and a wicker coaster tie the warm browns and ambers together.

Step 3: Build the Arrangement

On the other side of the console, I place a book with warm, cozy colors on the cover. I lay a small serving board on top of the book and add a plant pot with an interesting shape.

For the floral arrangement, I use soft green artificial stems from Hobby Lobby as the foundation, layering in more fall stems.

Step 4: Ground with a Dough Bowl

Finally, to ground the bottom part of the console, I bring in my favorite dough bowl filled with rustic seed pods and organic spheres, giving this look an earthy, organic feel.

If you love pumpkins, you can simply swap the carved wooden bowl for a small artificial pumpkin for a more traditional fall touch!

Look 3: Moody and Feminine

The final look is completely different—a bit moodier with a feminine touch.

Step 1: Create Drama with a Black Vase

I start with a black ribbed vase in the middle of the console.

To fill the vase, I bend some long seed cluster branches from Hobby Lobby. I add seated eucalyptus stems for variation and fluffy pampas grass for texture.

Step 2: Add a Feminine Touch

Though I could stop here, I decide to incorporate pale brown peonies that remind me of how flowers dry up as the weather cools. This adds a feminine touch to the darker elements.

Step 3: Balance with Layers

To balance the look, I bring in a ceramic bowl and the sea pods.

On the other side, there’s a black marble riser and stack a few other elements, including a candle, a trinket dish, and a match jar.

Step 4: Ground with a Basket

For the lower shelf, I use a black basket and stack a couple of books, topping them with a tortoiseshell box to tie all the colors together.
