Restyling Our Bar Area With Secondhand Finds

Our new house came with a little bar space that was, well, less than inspiring. When we moved in, it felt a bit awkward with its blue-gray walls and pendant fixtures that just weren’t my style.

We’re planning a full renovation in the future, but in the meantime, I couldn’t let this space sit unused. So, I decided to give it a quick restyle using some secondhand treasures. Let me take you through what I did!

The Before: An Awkward Bar Space

When we first moved in, this bar area was one of those spaces that just felt a little out of place. The walls had this blue-purple-gray tone, and the pendant lights above the bar were not doing it any favors. It didn’t feel cozy or welcoming—two things I definitely want in a bar space! Since a full renovation is still on the horizon, I needed a temporary fix that would make the area functional and stylish.

Step 1: Fresh Paint and New Pendants

The first thing we did was paint the walls. I chose alabaster white to give the space a fresh, clean look. This made a huge difference right away, brightening up the entire area and giving it a more open feel.

Next, we replaced those old pendant fixtures with crystal pendants. These are actually the same lights we have over our kitchen island, so it ties the two spaces together beautifully. The pendants add a touch of elegance and sparkle, transforming the whole vibe of the bar area.

Step 2: Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper Accent Wall

I wanted to create an accent wall in the little inlet area of the bar, so I chose peel-and-stick wallpaper that complements our kitchen cabinets. I love the way it blends with the rest of the space and the velvet chairs I had recovered for the dining area. The wallpaper was super easy to install and adds a nice texture and pattern without overwhelming the room.

Step 3: Styling with Thrifted and Vintage Finds

Now for the fun part—styling the bar! I love incorporating vintage and secondhand finds into my decor, and this space was the perfect opportunity to showcase some of my favorite pieces.

  • Vintage glass decanters: I collect vintage glass, especially decanters, so I knew these would be perfect for the bar shelves. They add a bit of sparkle and personality to the space.
  • Thrift-flipped art piece: You might remember the frame I reworked in a previous project. I placed it on a shelf, and it pairs perfectly with the rest of the decor.
  • Vintage wine chiller turned planter: I took an old wine chiller I found and repurposed it as an orchid planter. It’s a unique touch that adds some greenery to the space.
  • Art books and coffee table books: I have a serious love for beautiful books, so I decided to stack a few along the back edge of the bar. It’s a nice blend of decor and function since guests can grab a cocktail or pick up a book at the same time.

Step 4: Adding Ambiance with Lighting and Vintage Finds

I love creating cozy, inviting spaces, so I added some extra ambiance with pop lights tucked inside my vintage glass pieces. These little touches make the space feel warm and welcoming, perfect for a cocktail corner. The shelves are styled with various cocktail essentials and vintage glassware, which ties everything together beautifully.

What’s Next: Part Two of the Makeover

We’re not quite done with this bar area yet! There are still a few things I want to tackle, like adding some trim around the appliances underneath and finding the perfect rug. I also plan to rework some bar stools to complete the look.

The opposite side of this bar is going to be a coffee bar, and I’ll be styling that side next. I haven’t gotten to it yet, but I’m excited to share it with you when it’s done!

A New Orleans-Inspired Vibe

This little bar nook is really starting to remind me of a cozy corner you might find in an old New Orleans house. It’s filled with a mix of vintage finds, secondhand treasures, and personal touches—exactly the kind of space I love creating. I can’t wait to continue working on it and bring the full vision to life.

Stay tuned for part two of this makeover, and as always, happy upcycling!
