Transforming My Bedroom Into an Oasis With Touches of Coral

Your bedroom should be more than just a room—it should be an oasis, especially when you get home from a hard day’s work. I’m going to share some of my tips on how to make your bed not only comfy and cozy but also give it that expensive, luxurious look without the hefty price tag.

High-End Bedding on a Budget

Like most of us, I love going to HomeGoods—it’s my go-to place for high-end bedding. You can find designer brands like Kate Spade, Vera Wang, and Ralph Lauren, just to name a few.

I’m a huge fan of duvet covers because they’re easy to clean, and they let you change up the look of your bedroom for very little money. Plus, they save space compared to regular comforters.

This king-size duvet cover I got was only $39.99. Can you believe it? The detail on it is incredible. If you bought this at a retail store, you’d pay a lot more.

I also got another beautiful king-size duvet cover for $50. The detail is simple yet stunning.

Adding Luxury with Mattress Pads

I love using mattress pads because they add a feel of luxuriousness to the bed. They come in different varieties—cotton, wool, or memory foam. You can find them at HomeGoods for anywhere between $19 and $39.

Sheets and Thread Count

The most common question I get is, “What thread count should I buy for my sheets?” My advice is to get what you can afford, but whatever sheets you choose, clean them often. If you or your partner sweats a lot, clean them at least twice a week. Clean sheets make all the difference for a good night’s sleep.

If your sheets are wrinkled, here’s a tip: spray a little lavender mist on them and work the wrinkles out with your hands, or pop them in the dryer for a few minutes.

Quilts and Coverlets

You’ve probably seen me use matelassé quilts and coverlets before. HomeGoods has them, but Ross has started carrying them too, and for much cheaper.

They come in all different colors and sizes, and some even have matching pillowcases for as little as $16.99.

The Value of Goose Down Comforters

Goose down comforters can be pricey, ranging from $20 to $2,000. While synthetic comforters are more affordable, goose down is breathable and pulls moisture away from your skin, which is perfect since my husband sweats a lot at night. I didn’t pay anywhere near $2,000 for mine, but I can tell you that the quality is worth the investment.

The Burrito Technique for Duvet Covers

If you’ve ever struggled with putting on a duvet cover, let me share the life-changing "burrito technique." Start by turning your duvet cover inside out and lay it on your bed with the open end at the foot of the bed.

Spread your blanket or down comforter on top, making sure the corners match.

Then, starting at the head of the bed, roll it up like a burrito.

When you get to the foot of the bed, reach into the opening of your duvet cover and flip it over one end of the burrito.

Repeat on the other side, then flip the middle. Now, just unroll it back up to the top.

To remove it, just reverse the process!

Layering for a Designer Look

There’s nothing I love more than a pretty, well-made bed. Although I could leave the bed as is, I like to layer it like a designer.

There are no rules here—do what you love! I like to fold my duvet cover into thirds and lay it at the foot of the bed for that extra touch of luxury.

Protecting Your Pillows

Pillow protectors are a must. They protect your pillows from moisture and extend their life, helping reduce wear and tear. You can find them for around $7.99 to $12 a pair.

Unprotected pillows can become a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites, so it’s a good idea to invest in these.

The Panda Life pillow is the only pillow I can sleep on. It’s filled with shredded memory foam and comes with a pillow protector. They usually cost around $26 to $59, but they’re worth it for the comfort.

Dressing Up with Shams and Accent Pillows

I love to dress things up a bit by adding Euro shams. I have an Amazon link where you can purchase these for about $7 to $10 each, and they’re 26x26 in size—very affordable. You can also get the pillows from HomeGoods for around $12 to $15.

To finish the look, I place a few decorative accent pillows. I found these coral-colored pillows at Ross for only $9.99 each, and I bought three of them. This other decorative pillow was also from Ross and only $9.99.

Adding a Cozy Touch with Throws and Candles

At the foot of my bed, I added my favorite throw, which I’ve had for a while and can’t remember where I bought it, along with a lumbar pillow from JCPenney.

On my nesting tables, I placed a rose candleholder from Ross, and these faux coral roses from Michaels were only $4 for the bunch. It’s a small touch, but it complements the coral pillows and the throw on the sofa perfectly.

Affordable Furniture Finds

The two chairs in my bedroom are a new addition. I found them a few weeks ago, and they match the sofa at the foot of my bed. Here’s the best part—they were only $100, marked down from $250 in the clearance section of my all-time favorite furniture store, American Signature. I’m totally winning here!
